Spotted Cleaner Shrimp, Roatan

OWSI

Hello all. I am now an Open Water Scuba Instructor! It was a long two
weeks of studying and presentations. Lots of info ! It was like a
college class squeezed into two weeks! The actual exam was the
scariest. Those two weeks would be judged in two days.
The first day would be the orientation and then six exams. Physics,
RDP ( Recreational Dive Planer), Skills and Environment, Physiology,
Equipment, and finally PADI Standards. It took about 3 hours to
complete all the exams. As far as I was concerned the hard part was
over.
Day two would be presentations and in water teaching scenarios.
Although this is the fun part it is still a little nerve racking
having the Examinar floating behind you assining error that will
simulate real life common errors. A strange focus came over me as I
watch for errors. But it's done! All I can do now is wait for my
Instructor Number and then I can start certifying divers!
I plan to get at least 5 instructor specialties done in the next few
weeks. With these I have more opportunity to certify divers and get 25
certifications which will then make me a Master Scuba Diver Trainer.
Life is good here in Roatan.
Largly unaffected by the political problems on the mainland. Life goes
on here. There is a significant drop in tourism which is hurting the
dive industry but the hope is after the November elections stability
will return and people will be more confident in traveling to this
region again.
For now it's time to dive!
Miss u all! Love u all!

Utila So Good

Another great sail to Utila from Roatàn. The Winds filled the sail And
the wave rolled under the hull. Captian Vierne recorded our speed a
little over 7 knots. Huge waves slid forward underneath us and we
seemed to gain speed as it's backside pulled out from below. They
seemed mountianous compaired to the battered catamaran we floated on.
It looked as though the situation could turn nightmarish in one miss
step. We sailed on towards Utila feeling like babies being rocked
gently in their mothers arms.
Still dizzy from the night before the boat put us all to rest. Only
two hours into the sail and Utila was already growing from the size of
a match box to the sillouette of the hill that it is. It grew for
another two hours until we finnaly rounded the point at the West Side
of Utila.
Indecicive of what we were really doing we went with Viernes
suggestion on where to stay. Margarita Ville it is. This would let us
explore the island the next day and talk to a few people about where
and who to dive with. I have stayed with Alton's the last two visits
and really like the accomodations right on the water. You just can't
beat laying in bed being able to see the sea. Even if your sharing the
room with three other people.
We were all deciding on a place together. And we had a night and a day
to figure it out. The night insued into a chilled out sipping contest
until we decided to call it a night. On the long stroll back to our
accomodations we ran into Monty. He rounded us up with a couple smacks
to the face and twist of an arm and we were back on the hunt for a
crazy time. We found it a Cross Creek...

It's Been a While

Hello all! I think its been a few months now. Sorry about the delay I
hope the photos have been interesting. After all this time I am finaly
a Divemaster. It was a fun and educational journey. The Stamina test
was especially memorable and extremly challenging. It consists of a
800 yard swim with fins but no arms , 12 min of tread and the last
two minutes your arms are out of the water, then a 400 yard swim with
nothing, and then a 100 yard tired diver tow. All in a row! No
breathers! Needless to say I though I was a goner. I did get a 18 out
of 20 which I'm pretty satisfied with. Then later that day we had a
surprise rescue senario pulled on us.
Over the radio I heard the crackle of PJ the shop boss yell,
"Emergency in the Bay, looks like two people in distress to the left
of the channel! This is not a drill!"
Boom training kicked in and we all jumped to action. First on scene
was Bob, Kristen and I. Your suposed to pace your self to have enough
energy to preform the rescue but after a 400 yard swim I was beat. We
still had to get them to shore. But at least now we had them and they
were our shop instructors Matt and Rags and fine. But the drill
continued to shore. I started the rescue breaths and was going to
continue them until I drowned but the team came together and Bishoff
came in to support so we switched off he gave breaths while I caught
my breath and we went back and forth while Juan another DMT
(Divemaster Trainee) pushed the unconsious diver. We got close enough
to shore where Lauren was waiting in the water and took over the
rescue breaths as we all helped bring them to shore. We did it! The
victims were now pacients and the drill was cut. Happy in the success
of well preformed drill I was totaly spent from the stamina test to
this drill I'm lucky to not have passed out!

El Aguila Wreck

El Aguila was sunk in 1997 by Anthony's Key Resort. In 1998 hurricane Mitch battered her into pieces. The bow stayed secure in it's original position while the mid section collapsed creating long straight swim-thrus. The Stern fell onto it starboard side resting at a steep angle. The stern holds a maze of swim-thrus that require multiple dives to discover all its secrets. The bows highlight is a swim-thru located on the top floor. A hatch opens into a room with a solitary stool. Daylight streaming in reveals a way out over head.

7.1 Earthquake

May 29, 2009 7:40 AM
Back on Roatán! It's so good to be back in this heat and swiming and
diving! The big news is the 7.1 quake that scared the hell out of
everyone. This was the biggest the island has felt! To quote P.J.
Roundtree owner of Coconut Tree Divers, "I thought I ain't scared of
nothin. But now I know I'm scared of earthquakes!"
The quake hit at 2:15 or so. I was getting tossed about in bed all
over the place. I think I had incorperated it into a dream when
Annemarie said my name and I woke up. The whole place was jolting back
and forth a few feet it seemed it was difficult to stand and walk. My
first instinct was to look out the window and see what the f was going
on. I didn't even have my glasses on! So for the second I peered out I
saw blackness and realized it was a major earthquake. I turn to look
and see how things are in the apartment and see Annemarie in the
doorway so run and join her. Then I see Lauren my roommate come to her
door way. It stopped! We were all ok! Our hearts were pounding as
adrenaline was flowing through our bodies. It lasted from about 8-25
seconds.
I surveyed the apartment. No damage at all, like nothing happened. I
walked onto the porch to listen as see if I can hear how the neighbors
are doing. There was lots of glass smashing and things falling during
the trembling of the earth . I could hear a woman screaming in panic.
And then she stopped. I could her people talking and making sure there
family and neighbors were all safe and ok. Children were crying in
there houses and I could her babies screaming. I stood on my front
porch looking and listening trying to figure out what to do next.
Then it hit me, Tsunami?! This would be the perfect instance for one
to have been created. Then I recalled a loud grumbling almost like
thunder that lasted a good 5-10seconds right after the quake stopped.
Could this sound indicate that ground zero was on the main land? What
the hell do I know about this! So I listened and watched. Thinking how
I would know. I thought this was huge! If the quake originated in the
sea the wave would have struck by now, right?
My heart was still pounding. I could hear people getting their
families together and going to the hill. A spot where it seemed high
enough not to be hit my a tsunami. I listened. Some people were
staying. I listened. I had this feeling that everything was going to
be alright. I kept my thoughts to myself while I tried to calm
Annemarie and convince her that the worst was over. The after shocks
started to hit. They were big it seemed, you could feel the earth
quiver then stop. This has been happening what seems like hourly ever
since.
But life goes on almost uneffected.
The next day everyone had the scary stories. We all shared them and
luckily were a me to laugh out our fears. Many people including my
self still had no news as to what the aftermath was or anything for
that matter.

USA

May 26, 2009 3:39 PM
Hola! It been a week or so... And it's been about two weeks sence I
left Honduras. I'm back now!
This visit to the USA was great! I got to see Anna tie the knot and go
on a hike through a lava river cave in Bend Oregon. The I spent a few
day in New Hampshire going through my belongings before my parents
move out of NH for good. The house and the lake will be missed. Then I
ended my trip back in Boston with my favorite Chinese food joint in
Bostons Cbinatown, Hong Kong Eatery. The food there is so good and
priced just right. Although it does lack ambiance. But it does have
the Hong Kong authenticity. It's decorated with picture of Hong Kong
throughout the last century as it grew into a busy metropolis. And I
got to see a movie, Terminatir Salvation, which I need to see again to
form a better opinion cause it really wasn't that good. It seemed very
similar to it predecesors. I hear I need to see Star Trek. So that's
on the list but won't see that unless I take a trip to the mainland.
So now I sit in the smelly cigar bar in the San Pedro Sula airport
waiting for my bus. Annemarie has taken a walk around to get out of
this smokie place, not sure if I'll ever see her again.
We spent last night in Miami and checked out Miami Beach. Which was a
very agressive place it seemed. Guys walking around harrasing every
girl they saw. I even saw some guys sit down at a table of two girls
and begin chatting with them and eating their food! Messed up! The
girls weren't into it. But still did nothing dramatic to end the
situation. Anyway it just didn't seem like a place I would enjoy
spending an extended period of time. And a friend of mine couldn't
even make a 40 minute drive to see me! Guess that's Miami for ya.
But back to Honduras... So we wait for the bus to La Ceiba for the
night then take the ferry to Roatán in the morning.
We are thinking about renting a scooter and touring the island. I
haven't seen the east end of it yet so I'm excited for the adventure.
More to come...

Happy Times!

Creatures in The Cave!

State Side

May 14, 2009 10:02 AM
Being back state side has been ablazt so far. To touch on a subject
that I'm sure all my readers have thought about, my spelling. I
apologize for the horrendous spelling but that's just the way it's
going to be until I get an editor. As for the random disorder of
thoughs that's just the way it's going to be also. So sit back relax
and deal with it. Enjoy the photos and stories.
Back to the writing just needed a little diclamer of sorts in there.
Boston was great! It was amazing to see all u guys and get a chance to
catch up a little. For those of you I wasn't able to see on this trip
I will be back before I leave a make a point to see u all congrates to
those that are newly engadged and those that have offspring now. Time
flies by and all we have of the past are our memories and photos for
the most part.
The energy in Boston is always radiant with two huge sports teams with
two huge wins! Not that I really care but it does feel good to see it
happen a feel part of it all.
The bars were off the hook with cheers and songs. People whipping
there team colours around and strutting around in their jerseys.
I got about an hours rest before getting up and grabbing a can to the
airport. Matt thanks for the effort next time if your not making moves
in back allies with u know who u can get me to the airport.
I'm now driving through Oregon from Portland to Bend after an amazing
stay at my Uncles house where we had the best burgers ever! I
definitly felt the energy flowing through my viens. It's been a long
few months with out good beef.
I really enjoyed meeting my uncles family/roommates. Maybe one day I
will teach them to Scuba.
Just got into Redman when we will pick up my bro.
Out!

La Posada

This is the chillin hostel I crashed at in San Pedro Sula.

Chillin in the Commons

Beantown!

May 12, 2009 10:50 AM
It's hard to believe I'm sitting in Boston Common right now! It's a
magnificant spring or is it summer day. The birds are chirping the sun
shining and the sirens ringing. City life!
Sipping on a Starbucks latte remenising the life I once had here. Not
missing it as I watch people rush by with tough faces and not one
person actknowledging another. It's amazing how you can feel invisible
in a crowed of people. No one sees anyone else but themselves and
their mission at hand. The focus is inspireing and scary.
I have plans to hit up the Hong Kong Eatery for lunch then hopefuly a
movie. Tonight I will atempt to make my rounds to say hello to old
friends and friendly booze slingers around town.
Last night I got a chance to hit up Beantown Pub and whoop Dougies
butt at a quick game of billiards. Then to Fanuel Hall to The Point to
see Matty H my old Southie roomy. After that it was over to Porters
for a pint. Back for only a few hours and I had already seen half my
favorite joints. Lovin life.

Leaving SAP

May 11, 2009 12:15 PM
I'm now waiting for my flight in SAP. Should be in Beantown tonight
for a few beers with my Boston Crew. Miss u guys!
The phone I recieved from my dream girl just fn broke! I was going to
make some calls before my departure but now I'm just sitting waiting g
and writing. Tourists roam around me as if they're lost. Some heading
home others on to continue their holidays. I feel as though I'm going
on holiday.
I spent the night in San Pedro Sula where I bumped into a group of
Hong Kong Chinese from England that were diving with us the past week.
I was there Dive Master on a number of dives. They were fun to hang
with and chat about Hong Kong. One of them is a Cathay flight
attendent that flies back and forth from HKG to London weekly. I think
there parents live in the New Teritories.
Made me home sick for Hong Kong and for good Chinese food.
As I travel around the States I have my reading to do and when I
return I will Finnish up my Dive Master training exames and if
possible continue to instructor. From there who knows, Caymans, US
virgin Islands, live aboard in the indo-pacific. This the life and
career I have been looking for just need to make it happen now! See
some of u soon.
Out!

Another Page Turns

May 10, 2009 10:15 PM
Hello all. Not sure who all is any more, friends family and just quiet
readers. It's been a few weeks that I haven't updated my adventures.
Right now I'm comfortably laying in a hammock in San Pedro Sula
reflecting on the last few weeks. It is hard to avoid a good time on
Roatán. If your not looking for one a good time will find you. It
takes a lot of effort to hide out and it didn't always work.
As my usual day goes I dive a few times a day then grab a beer and see
where the night goes.
I just finnished up assisting on a rescue course. This is super
challenging physicaly and mentaly for the students. As they are
bombarded with rescue situations left and right to force perceptual
narrowing we can see how well they may react to an incedent. This was
fun and challenging for me as well. I for the most part was acting as
the victim in panic situations and unconsious diver incedents.
This fun yet challenging week was lightened by the chance meeting of a
fun drop dead bangin broad that seemed to have come straight out of my
dreams as I was woken one night by her and her partner in crazyness.
They had gained access from Brandon. It was a start to a romance that
I never expected. Although it may only be a quick memory in time she
will always be remembered by being one of the only girls I never
minded following every comand. Maybe one day we will meet again.
Hardly likely but you never know what life can and will throw in your
face. I can only hope.
Later in the week we took a trip to West Bay where we did a bit of
snorkeling and skin diving. I reach my record to date of 50 feet. I
was under the direct supervision of a mermaid so although I was not
physicaly 100% for the dives I pushed myself to my limits. I'm
confident I will reach 60 feet the next time out.
After the intence skindiving session we reenacted a few cheesy dance
moves in the water. It was cute to the point I will never forget.
As I become a faint memory in the sea of her adventures I will always
remember her sexy smile and strong smart yet cute demeanor.
As Brandon said this morning as I left the apartment "another page
turns".
So the adventure continues.

Happy Birthday Coconut Tree Divers!

April 20, 2009 10:33 PM
Coconut Tree Divers had their 5th Birthday Bash. I went on the morning
dives then opon return we promptly closed up shop and then everone
packed onto CTD's boats for a trip to West Bay where we partied the
day away in the water and the bright Caribean sun. I think I sat in
the water for a few hours straight! It was a good 4:20 party!

April 16, 2009

April 16, 2009 1:15 PM
It's the first time I've gotten sick down here. Good thing I live next
to the Clinic and the Pharmacy. I'm taking my first sick day from
diving which I do not like. The last few dives I have lead my own
dives both times just me and the diver. It is a new experience to be
the dive guide but I did make it back to the boat with my divers both
times. Granted one of the two dives was a drift dive so the boat came
to me but I did surface inthe predetermined area.
I've been trying to explore some of the island away from where I spend
most of my time. Coxen Hole is the capital city. It is bustling with
people children and merchants. It's where the supermarket is but how
super the market is can be debated. It gets a lot of imported goods
but a few things don't make it down. One thing I have yet to find is a
bag of jasmine rice. The long grain rice they have will have to do for
now.
Two days ago Coconut Tree Divers held a carnival on the beach to
support Sol International. All profits went to support the needy
children of Roatán. It was a great time mostly kids from the island
played our games and although it seems we support other diveshop fund
raisers they didn't give us much support. Guess that's just how it
works here.
Finally got a good cable connection. It has HBO and Showtime and the
WB. During the day it works great but at night it gets fuzzy. I think
this is because most if not all the island has spliced into the same
feed. Apprently there is one person that gets the feed and some how
shares it out but is they change the channel on there cable it changes
it for the whole island. I hope to get some more pictures up soon.
Maybe tonight. I'll also have to do some reviews on the hot spots down
here soon also.

It's about 4:00pm Roatán time and the power has gone out. This is a
regular occurance as the power cables are such a mess it's hard to
imagine it can work at all. Not only are there bundles of twisted wire
strung from pole to pile and tree to tree the power here is the most
expensive in the world. Being powered by deseil fuel makes it seem
absured anyone here can aford electricity. And I'm heated cause I was
just watching a movie on HBO. It wasn't any good and I don't even know
what it's called but none the less I want my movie back!

April 15, 2009

April 15, 2009 2:17 PM
It's been a long two weeks of diving! I have begun to lead dives. I
just let people dive and keep an eye on them. I try to find cool
things to show them but most of the time these creatures show up. I
have found where four yellowhead jawfish have made the burrows which
is always cool when I find them again. One of these dives I'm going to
take my camera to do a little photoshoot. Island life is always fun.
With the same people that live here and then the people that swing
through for a few days to a few weeks.
I get to dive everyday and it just dosent get old. Each dive has new
challenges and every one features unreal life forms.

I live here now!

April Fools

April 1, 2009 11:54 AM
Found an apartment! It is modern with hot water one AC and cable TV.
It's been nice not having a TV but it will also be nice to veggout
too. The apartment is in the same place as the Local Clinic so I'll
stop in and meet the Doctor. Only a five minute walk to the Dive
Shopand the water.
I have started my Dive Master Training Internship. It is fun learning
how the shop works and how to take people on dives. In about 2 months
I should be a certified Dive Master not to be confused with Master
Diver which higher on the ranks. I will be able to take open water
divers out on dives which will be fun and challenging.
I want to do a skin dive today but need to find some one to go out
with. Or just chillin on my day off from training.
Miss being back in the snow and fridged temps of the Northeast!

From Roatàn to Utila

March 11, 2009 2:41 PM
Completed my Advanced Open Water! Awesome diving. The Wreck dive was
enlightening. I didn't think I would be to into wrecks but it was
spectacular. We defended down to the wreck at 110ft down. It was
amazing to drop in out inthe open with only blue below. The siluette
of the ship faded in like a supernatural entitie making an apearence.
We followed our intstructor through an opening in the hull and floated
through the rusty skeleton exiting right onto the sandy floor it
rested on. Through another swim through which opened into an eel
garden. The eel garden is what looks like from a distince to be a thin
grassy patch. As you get closer you can make out little heads and eyes
as there body disapears into a hole in the sand. They swayed in the
current and looked like Madusa Hair all facing the same direction.
They retracted into their homes when I journyed too close. We then
continued to enter the wrecks dark passages and out a small square
hatch with put us stairing up at center mast the pointed straint to
the sky. Huge groupers circlesas if they were garding the site. Amazing!

March 17, 2009 3:37 PM
It's been hard to write for the last week. I am now a certified rescue
diver. Do u trust me? Ha. I'm sitting in the scattered shade of a tree
sipping a refresco. The breeze is flutteing back and forth like
breaths from the sea. Children are talking and playing behind a white
picket fence. To my left is a small tienda with the sound of produce
being chopped. While people on scooters and in cars wizz by going so
fast to where can only be seconds away.
I'm back on Utila after exactly 2 years! For saint patricks day. I
friend I met in Roatan and I took a catamaran for a 4 hour sail from
coconut tree diver peir west end Roatán right to the peir at Altons on
utila. We just sat in the trampaline in front as the water rushed
under us. Almost like flying over water. This guy Verne sails back and
fourth between Roatán and utila every day. Can't beat that.
Sorry I don't have photos up yet. The Internet is kind of bad down
here. I'll get some flowin when I'm into an apartment.
I was diving and flipping off the 2 stories dock at Altons. It was
sweet. I endded my high jumps with a full on back flopp! Nice! No ones
going to see one of those for a while. One compasionate soul asked if
I was ok.
This was all after two nice dives off the north shore of Utila. Saw a
huge turtle a lobster a bristle star... So sweet just diving and
looking at all this beautiful unimaginable life.
Nowhe night can only get crazier as it progresses. Should be a good
St. Patricks Day.

More Diving

March 9, 2009 10:25 PM
Just don't know where to start this time. If I haven't mentioned
before I am diving with Coconut Tree Divers in Roatán. This dive shop
is one of many on Roatán but stands out because it is the first shop
you see when entering West End. It is also very lively with many
people hanging out at the shop after there dives conversing about
their dives or anything that always seems to be interesting. There is
a wide range of personalities and nationalities and atitudes. My first
experience was meeting Gay one of the Owners. She was very helpful and
kind something that most people don't realize is the key to making
people comforable and more receptive. Her atitude was really a
clincher for me when I look back on it. As any establishment goes you
always have people comfortable in there environments that have been
around for a while and know each other. In this situation even some of
the best people can seen rude unitentive or just simple to helpful.
This is totaly understandable. Is it acceptable well I don't make the
rule nor do I want to but what business can aford to lose potenial
clients? Now I'm writing some sit of missin statment opps.
Anyways it's a great place with a range of peronalities as any place
is and these people and diversity is what makes it intersting. The
importanthing about them is they are safe and responsible.
All that said I have begun my adanced certification training and will
soon be thinking of the next steps of life down here. The first dives
for the advanced certification were Deep Dive and Navigation dive. The
deep dive started with an amazing sighting of two Southern sting rays
and one little Hawks bill turtle. This got us all even more excited
than the deep dive it self.
We decended to 100ft below and rested on a sandy patch at a max depth
of 112ft. I then compuortably settled to the sand and watched as one
diver was trying to adjust her ear pressure and another student tryed
to take it upon himself to handle the situation. Al the while I'm
sitting back watching in amazement thinking I hope this dosent end up
bad. Students are not ment to nor are we trained to assist divers in
distress. And she wasn't even in distress this guys reaction was
inapropriat as we have divemasters and our highly trained and skilled
instructor to handle it. All the while we are down here to test our
suceptiblility to nitrogen narcosis which basicaly getting a little or
in some cases intoxicated. This happens only ant these extrem
depthsand is not life threatening or harmfull on it's own yet the
disicions a diver makes while experincrng nitrogen narcosis can be if
they are unaware or not trained for the situation.
So a sat back and watched from about ten feet away. Our dive master
who is there to assist our instructor jumped into action and grabbed
the guy and gestured with athority for him to move back and return his
atention to our instructor. The dive master then comunicated with the
diver trying to adjust her ear presure and the situation was dealt
with. Very exciting. I just could believe this guy thought he could
take her up to adjust her ears. A rapid asent at this depthould not be
good.
Anyway one of the skills we needed to do was to complete a math
problem at 100ft down and see how long it would take compared to
asimilar test we took on the surface. I had no problems it may have
taken a bit long under than on the surface but that was the purpose to
see how we preformed at depths suceptible to nitrogen narcosis.
All in all a great day and tomorrow I will do three dives. A wreck
dive to start then a dive to perfect my bouyancy and control and
finaly a night dive. After this it's all done and I'm an advanced open
water diver.
This was just my dive stories there is much more I did in the evening.
But I hope to go to bed now. But I will write more about the most
interesting conversations I've had with anybody I've ever met! And I'm
rooming with the two Brandon and Vanesa. Both amazing people I've only
known for a few days. I'm out big day tomorrow. More later.

First Dives in Over Two Years!

March 7, 2009 10:24 PM
Whoo Yeah!! I. Trying to energetic abouthis cause today I did what
I've been thinking about for the last two and a half years! But I'm
totaly exausted and can't wait to crash and do it again when I wake
up. Dive! I did two dives in the after noon! Too many exclamation
marks already but more are coming so deal with it!
The first dive was Bikini Bottoms which was great but I was thinking
about way too much. I had my camera my dive watch all my new gear and
it was my first dive in mrs than two years so I was tring to remember
all my training. And my breathing. Just not good to be thinking about
every breath. But all that aside it was sick! I really feel at home
here and I'm only on day two but of course I feel this way about new
experiences no matter what...
The second dive went much better. I was more comfortable breathing
which made me able to focus on the awesomeness. We saw a huge Clinging
Crab. A Horse Eye Jack trying to shake off a Remora (I think that's
what the parasite fish is called). A Lobster a huge Barracuda a Morey
Eel and a Nurse Shark. I was jazzed about the crab but everyone else
was talking about the Shark, apparently there not so common these
days. And we only got to see the tail sticking out of it's sleeping
spot.
I took snaps of a lot and the two best shot were of a scorpion fish
and they were taken my Andy our Master Diver (the diver with the
highest level certification possible). They were awesome clear shots.
I'll post ehm not to worrie!
After the dives I was totaly drained and thought in was going to take
a nap but the dive beers kept me going. So I make a quick change into
my bug shield clothing and watched the sunset with my roommates Leana
and Brandon. After that it was a few beers and dinner at Sundowners.
Stephany (a Dive Master from France) and the gang were heading over to
get Rotisery Chicken which is supposed to be phenominal for their
dinner and I was just to exausted to make the walk. I really didn't
want to say no I actually wanted to go but was just to tyred to make
the walk. Next time.
It's five till eleven so Im Going to passout. I'm going diving at 830
or nine. So i'm up early and into the ocean! Loving life. Goodnight.

Made It!

March 5, 2009 9:23 PM
I got to La Ceiba and to Hotel Caribe as planned. I now know why
Shannon said hell no to this place and opted for a hotel a few dollars
more just out side of the the city. This place is located in the
middle of down town but the place is a bit budget. They gave me the
room right next to the receptionand entrance. So I can now hear every
one coming in and out and passing by on the street one level down. But
being my first night here I do enjoy listening to the activity. I just
hope it quiets down by eleven so I can rest up for my day to roatan.
On the bus here I tried to meet a threesome of New Yorkers but they
were content with each other and I'm sure I weirded out the guy I was
chatting with. It was his first time out of the USA and he had all the
reservations one would expect. I don't think it helped that I sat next
to him (I was following my seat asignment) while the bus was not even
close to being full. I did move after we started moving though. They
acted as I might have if I were with my good friends. Although I think
if I run into them on Roatan it will be better that I have met them
already.
I have been listening to my Spanish lessons which are helping me out.
I have been talking to people and they all seem to think I speak
Spanish. They always ask after a little conversation but it seems to
end when I tell them I speak only a little. But dr the met part I thnk
I'm doing a good job communicating and making it seem like I can speak
the language. I just hope I get enough Spanish on Roatan or I just
might have to find an apartment in Ceiba and learn here and take my
tips out to the islands.
So far day one and I'm totaly loving it.
I can't end with that can I.
When we got into Ceiba we arrived at the Hedman Alas stop which is
relativly close to town. I was expeting to come into the bus stop that
is out side of ceiba but this was much better. The cabbies here speak
a little English. More than I speak Spanish. Mario the cab driver
double the price on me but I knocked it half so he just filled up
every seat to make he share. I left the other English speaking kids.
As I acutualy prefer it although I'm sure Mario the cabbies was asking
me if I wanted to get dropped first but I had no clue who he was
speaking to and everyone else got a good laugh but I may be paranoid.
He dropped me at my shady hotel/motel. I then proceded to arrange my
trip to the ferry in the morning all in English. So he said 8am for
100 lempiras which is roughly 5 bucks.
With my morning all set I walked into my chosen hotel thinking if I
really wanted to stay here for the night but I had to clquench my
curiosity which was lingering for a couple years. As I said before I
now am convinced Shannon made the right choice for comfort but the
place is in a great location. As someone out side my window hucks a
luggie!
I got my room and went out for dinner. I read in my lonely planet that
the pizza hut is a good choice so with that in mind from earlier I
walked over to the park where it and a few other restrants circle the
cities parke central. I did a quick walk aroung the area with a few
hombres trying to get my attention with hollers and one even yelled
"That's a cool hat!" it seems more kids here are learnng English. I
also got begged by a little kid that was saying he was very hungry in
Spanish and wanted a dollar. I don't even give the homeless dollars in
Boston. But last time I was here a gave a kid that looked just like
this guy only a bit younger a couple bucks, so I dont feel that bad. I
would have given him some cash but I didn't want to bust out my wallet
just then. Next time I told him but that just prompted more complaining.
I finaly got to Pizza Hut and although I wanted a Salva Vida with my
pizza the one beer they had on the menu was just as satisfing. It was
Heineken if you can believe that! And to top it off they had free wifi
so I got to check my mail and eat. A few local chicas were checking me
out from across the room too. Did I mention I love this place.
That's it for day uno. Goodnight

The Flight to San Pedro

March 5, 2009 9:21 AM
I'm on the flight down now. Arrival city is San Pedro Sula. From there
on to La Ceiba and then in the morning to Roatán. Finally! So siked!
The plan seems to be full of American Catholic Missionary Students. A
few American families and some Honduran Students returning home for
spring break. Should be quick flight. The closer I get to where I'm
going and the farther I get from the cold the easier it gets.

Desolation

From One Extreme...

I'm standing on frozen Lake Winnipesaukee after a short snow shoe
walk. This was fun but I am sure swimming in crystal clear Carribean
waters will be much more pleasurable.

Getting Ready to Hit the Road

[February 28, 2009]
I am at the lake with all the stuff I have acumulated throughout my
life. Most of it is going in the trash. Some of it I am and have givin
to friends and family to one day see again I hope although it is no
longer mine as long as it is taken care of I can move on. This goes
for my fish as well that I had to give away. But after this experience
I really don't want to start a saltwater aquarium again. There are
just to many organisims that perish in the end.
I have laid out most of what I will be bringing with me on this new
life adventure. It already looks like way too much. I already know I
will be struggling carrying all this stuff. The main extra weight is
my scuba gear. It's all good stuff and I know it will get used. That
is if it doesn't get pillaged on the way from the airport to the island.
The journey from the airport to Roatan will take a full 24 hours but
more than twelve hours will be spent in La Ceiba waiting to catch the
ferry. I'm not sure if I will stay at a grubby but fun hostel type
hotel or go for the comfortable clean but private hotel. I'm thinking
I should do the grubby accomodations and meet some other travelers.
This is most likely what will do. After all I am out for an adventure
and meeting people will make it the adventure I'm looking for.
When I think about being there I get very excited and can't wait! Only
four more days! Or is it five.
The first part of the trip I have pretty much done before two years
ago. But once I get to Roatan the totaly new journey will have begun.
I have a loose idea of where I will be staying but the final decision
will be made once I'm there and probably after a few days of scopeing
out the establishments and areas. Budget travel has to be done with a
lot of flexbility and spontinaity or it just wouldn't be in the budget!

Saying Fairwell to Boston

[February 24, 2009]
I'm leaving Boston in just two days! This is so very exciting! As I
prepare for this adventure I'm trying to hit up all the spots I love
most in Boston. I got my Beantown Pub steak tips about a week ago and
then the cheeseburger club on this past Friday night at my send off.
And the send off is worthy of a comment.
Of course I invited as many people as I could and only a handful
showed but all good people. And some I didn't even fathom showed up
but made the night even better! We all had too much to drink. Which is
always the case. After the bar Doug Matt and I went to Chinatown for
awesome late night Chinese food! The walnut prawns are delicious at
Moon Villa. The place was and usually is jam packed with drunk people
after the bars close.
I got a Bari wrap from Viga. I seem to have missed out on a lot of
stuff though. Moving out proved to be more time consuming than I
anticipated as usual.

As my departure date quickly approches my excitment grows! I hope to
accomplish many new adventures and strengthen creative ideas. I can't
wait for my first dive in more than 2 years! Anyone have a hoseless
dive computer for sale? I'm looking to get one before I head down.

My World Pass

Got my new passport! It has that chip in it. Now they will know if I
try to travel to Cuba! I now have to fill it up with immigration
stamps and visas. That's going to be fun.

A few movies on an overcast cold day in Boston.

Here's a great international feeling movie! Watch this to see something new. It's fun exciting and shows a lot of India. Highly recomend this film.
As for Gran Torino it is also a good film, well directed. A few weaker preformances but that's a casting issue. Eastwood was great as always.

Testing

Just a test to see how my thoughts r sent from my phone and email.

Is this the beginning of a good blogger

Ok so I just set this up to see if it will be a good blog for my travels. I will be updating my process for getting ready to disembark the USA for an exciting and risky life in Central America!
